5 Reasons to Document a Day In Your Life

Need a reason to document a day in your life?? I've got FIVE good ones for you today and I bet you will be charging your cameras and cleaning off your memory cards in about 2 seconds flat if you make it all the way to the end of this post!

If you've been wanting to record a day in the life, now is the time! Ali Edwards' will be completing her second DITL of 2016 this Saturday and I totally encourage you to check it and play along! I've captured and recorded a single day for the past five years along with Ali (and on my own a few times) and the photos and memories are some of my very favorite. But the pictures....oh.my.gosh. They make me cry the ugly cry every.single.time. As much as I would like to think I remember everything, I just don't. Waaahh. I hate it, but it's true. We just can't remember it all, so thank heavens for cameras and notes and the stuff of life.

So here ya go, friends! My five awesome reasons for picking up your camera and being the crazy lady in Target snapping photos as your kids run down the aisles!

Number one: Life goes so quickly.

Oh man does it ever. You know that saying "the days are long, but the years are short"? So flippin' true. I swear it was just yesterday that my son was in his crib sucking on his 400 pacifiers. I miss those cute little cheeks and chubby fingers and how he always had at least three pacifiers on him at any time. One in the mouth, two in the hand. Sigh. My ovaries kind of hurt now. Ok, sorry, I digress…

But seriously, though. Life is too short. The things that you think you'll remember this year will be soon replaced with memories from next year and the year after and the year after. Taking a moment to record the here and now is incredibly priceless. Just scroll back through your photos on your phone… You'll see what I'm talking about!

Number two: You can view your world from a different perspective.

Fun fact. At least once a day I yell and scream at my kids under my breath (obviously...I'm not THAT mean). Yep… At least once a day. Spilled milk, skidmarks in underwear, and messes everywhere are enough to make me batty most days. Looking at your life through the lens, however, gives you a new perspective on things. It gives you a minute just sit back, observe, and laugh about these moments that will soon be long gone and long forgotten. I'm not saying that it's any less obnoxious when that second glass of milk spills on the floor, but at least my camera gives me a reason to enjoy that moment and record it!

Number three: You become a part of the picture.

If you're snap happy like me, you are usually behind the camera, not in front of it. I'll be the first one to raise my hand and admit that I don't like being in front of the camera. I feel awkward and weird and ugh... It's just bad y'all.

But… I know that my kids could care less, and down the road these will be photos that we will cherish, so I make a conscious effort to stick my happy face in some photos (and snap pics of my husband too, because he hates the camera maybe more than I do). Most of the shots with me have been taken around these day in the life or week in the life projects. And I'm totally fine with that! These are great opportunities for us to remember to let our hair down, and get crazy with our kids. This is real life, people. Record it!!

Number four: Things stay the same, but different at the same time.

It always surprises me every year I complete this project that many things stayed the same, but with a new life. Anna has been an avid book lover since she was a teeny, tiny, cute, little, skinny baby. Her love for books has never changed. Every year I take part in this project I snap a picture of Anna reading some type of book. I love how that one aspect of our lives has stayed the same, but has evolved in so many different ways.

This project is a great way to celebrate those little things of life. The things that are the same. The things that make us who we are.

Number five: You create a time capsule of your story.

Everyone has a story to tell. Everyone. Good, bad, ugly, silly… You have a story to tell! So tell it. Grab your camera, snap away, and document the memories of your days. Then do it again the next year! I promise you won't regret it. Ever ever ever.

Recording your everyday? Sounds a little scary right? I mean, the house isn't clean and there's laundry on the floor! But that's a-ok! That's the beauty of YOUR life and your day! This project can be whatever you want to make it. The most important thing is to tell your story and record those fleeting moments of life. So are you in? Hope so!

Week In The Life: Monday Photos

I totally didn't plan on doing Week in the Life this year, but...

I have loved every single photo, detail and memory I've captured in my previous WITL books (

2014

,

2013

,

2013 Project Life

,

2011

), but I'm not sure I've got a whole week in me this go 'round.

I think there is a lot of pressure when it comes to documenting AN ENTIRE week of your life (at least there is for me).  I get all stressed out....like I might miss something, or forget my camera, or maybe the photo won't tell the story like I pictured it in my mind.  I talked myself out of recording our days this year because I just wasn't sure I would get it "right".  But somehow today, I found myself reaching for my camera trying to capture our moments.  I originally told myself I would try to do ONE photo of the day - that can't be that hard for a picture-taker like myself, right.  I obviously couldn't stop at just one, though.  How do you choose just one?  So I gave myself the freedom to snap away without the worry of what kind of album I would create, or even if I would print these photos.

I challenged myself to just see our life through the lens.  And like always, I am so glad and so grateful that I decided to pick up the camera.  I don't think I will ever tire of documenting and recording our days.  I do it all the time anyway.  There shouldn't be any pressure or expectation or comparison.  You shouldn't have to worry about albums or pockets or filler cards.  It should be just as it sounds - a week in your life....documented.

I'll be sharing the highs and lows from each day throughout the week:

Monday highs:

TCX | sunny skies | Drew excited to go to the gym | tea parties | Anna starting a diary | Chase's ollies in the yard | crepe myrtles and their bright flowers | brussels sprouts. lots and lots of brussels sprouts | grilled chicken salad | reading Me Before You | Drew's naked belly | playing vet doctor with the kids | giggles | evening walk with just Scott and Chase | photo editing

Monday lows:

leftover homework | carpool line | Drew's messy room | potty accidents | Anna's meltdown during dinner | unloading the dishes | Drew's ouchie

Week In The Life: A Look Back

Ali Edwards is embarking on her Week in the Life project again next week and I'm torn about how I want to approach this project.  I've participated in her project two of the last three years, and took some time yesterday to look back through my albums.  This project, although tedious and time consuming, is so worth it.  Just flipping through my books from 2011 and 2013 made me want to jump right in and get started.  I took two very different approaches the two years I completed this project.  I don't think I could pick a favorite.  One is jam-packed with photos, words, quotes, recipes, ephemera....and one is much more minimal and clean.  I think my "style" has evolved over the years and both albums represent my personality at that particular time.

This is a look at my 2011 album.  I used an 8.5x11 We R Memory Keepers album and Ali's WITL digital templates.  Each day includes on large photo, small baseball card photos and one photo collage.  This book is very photo heavy with little embellishments or "fillers".  I did include a lot of words about our "daily life", and while I didn't think much about this when I did it, it might be my favorite part of the book.  I loved looking through the receipts, recipes, tags, etc.  They brought back so many memories!  I also loved all of the words, quotes and lists I included in this album. Those memories definitely fade with time and having them recorded is the best!  As you will see at the end, I used Ali's Daily Sheets, which I highly recommend.  Looking back through our timeline and daily events vs. today's happenings is crazy!

I skipped over 2012 because I felt like our days were pretty similar to that of 2011 and wasn't sure I had it in me to document a whole week.  I picked back up this project in 2013 and took a very different approach this time around.

For 2013, I decided to create ONE Project Life spread and a digital album through Artifact Uprising. I really wanted my album to be photo-heavy and really didn't want to bother with adding in embellishments or extras in my book.  Having it printed and bound was the best decision for me last year.  And I love our little book.  It's very different from my 2011 album and I love that!  So much has changed, but so much is still the same.

I printed all of my photos in an 8.5x8.5 soft covered book from Artifact Uprising.  I love their books so much (and have printed several more since this one)!

For this book, I started with a recap of our day and one large photo, followed by a few more photos or photo collages (depending on the photos I had for that particular day).  After I had edited my photos, uploading and building this book was a piece of cake.  It took me about 30 minutes from start to finish (which is waaaaaaaay different than the amount of time it took me to do my 2011 WITL album).

I wanted to have something a little more tangible about our week, so I put together a very simple Project Life spread.  I picked one photo from each day of the week and filled the pockets with a title card and then seven daily photos.  I used Ali's Days of the Week script brushes to add the day to my photos.  The middle row of 3x4 cards were filled with some journaling and other filler cards....basically just to make it pretty!

This spread is one of my favorites!  I just love the photos and a quick glimpse of our week!!

I'm still a little undecided on this year.  I think I'll definitely incorporate something into either my Project Life album or maybe a mini book, but I'm not quite sure yet.  I did purchase Ali's awesome WITL kit, so I do have that available.  What about you??  Are you participating this year?  Are you following Ali's lead and creating an album, or are you taking your own twist on the project??  I'd love to hear your ideas!!

week in the life: project life edition

today, i am sharing how i incorporated this week into my project life album.  originally i was just going to skip this week, but then i loved the photos from the week and i couldn't pass up putting them in my album.  i did keep it very simple for completion sake....

i picked my favorite photo from each day and then printed them 4x6 with a white border.  i added ali edwards days of the week brushes onto my photos prior to printing.

for the middle journaling cards, i mainly added pretty cards, a calendar and some quick journaling about documenting our week.  the beautiful journaling cards are from dearest someday.

here is a look at the finished spread...

simple and easy.  and it's done.  that's what matters most to me.  sometimes i let these projects percolate in my head for a while and then lose steam to actually finish them in a timely manner.  not this time.  i made my plan and stuck to it.  i definitely think that having the book printed gave me enough energy to finish up my PL spread.

i will definitely be completing this project again.  maybe in 2-3 years.  looking back through our three albums, i can definitely see how we've changed but since i keep up with project life, i feel like that is documented.  i do want to try to take more "everyday" photos (but those cute kids always steal the scene!!).

what about you?  how is your week in the life album coming??  did you document in PL?

thanks so much for visiting today!!  let me know if you have any questions!

xoxo

week in the life 2013 album & a video

i am so excited to share my 2013 week in the life album with you.  this is my third year doing week in the life, but my first year making a digital photo book with all of my photos.  i went back and forth about what i wanted to do and in the end i decided that digital was best for me.  right now, i'm overflowing in books and layouts and i love every.single.one.  but i wanted to do something different.

i looked around at all of the different options of digital photo books and i fell in love with artifact uprising as soon as i clicked on their main page.

the site is so clean and so inviting.  it took me about 45 minutes to upload and send my book to print (and nope...not being compensated with product for this review...just my honest to goodness opinions). i chose the 8.5x8.5 inch softcover book and i went with a very simple approach.  pictures and words. pictures and words.

i did a daily recap of each day and then followed that with my daily pictures.  using ali edwards daily sheets was a true lifesaver.  i left one page blank at the end of each day to go back and write notes and thoughts.  (but...knowing me and my OCD tendencies...it is highly unlikely that a pen, or even my children, will ever touch this book)

i put together a little video to show you a quick look at the book.  i felt like still photos didn't do it justice...you just have to look at to pretty music!  and just so you know...this is my very first video.  please don't judge me.  i'm apparently video-challenged.

here are a few photos of some of my favorite pages....

this photo was hands down my favorite photo of our week.  it's my week in a nut shell.  it's my week with a four-year old and a (very messy) two-year old.  it's my week as a momma.  it's what i do.  it's my life.

so...what do you think??  i just love it!  and i love that it's all done and safely sitting waaaay up high on a shelf (i know, i know...i'm supposed to share).

tomorrow i will share how i incorporated this week into my project life album.  i originally just planned to skip over this week, but.....i just couldn't do it.  i kept it pretty simple, though!!

thanks so much for stopping by!!
see you tomorrow!

week in the life...sunday

yay!!  i've officially documented our week.  i totally slacked off on sunday.  i think i have reached my "picture taking capacity".....and that's saying a lot since i always have my camera with me.

i did love using my DSLR this week.  the iphone takes awesome photos, and i typically find myself using that primarily for convenience, but boy can you tell a difference with my "big camera".  hoping to keep it close by more.

here are our pictures and words from sunday...

waking and making pancakes...

reading and relaxing...

playing...

coloring and playing and making messes

resting...

crafting...

eating freezie pops...

watching football and eating yummy chili

thanks to everyone who stopped this week!!  i love all of the new visitors and hope you will stop by often!!

i'm still trying to figure out my plan for these photos and i will definitely post here when i do decide.

week in the life...saturday

saturday was a busy one for us.  i definitely didn't pick up my camera as much, but i do love what i captured.  the weekends are always full of fun for us, so i hate that i didn't capture every moment, but it is what it is.

week in the life...friday

i can't believe i am mostly done with this project.  i have truly loved capturing our week.  i love all of the "little moments" in a day that i may not have documented.  i can definitely tell i've slacked off with picture taking as the week has progressed.  it's likely because our days really don't vary that much.  regardless of how many images i end up, it's still our memories recorded.  and that's pretty darn cool.

here are our photos and words from friday....

waking...

reading and writing...

emailing...

drawing...

dancing...

unloading groceries...

working husband...

so i said i wasn't going to do week in the life this year.  and then i read this post by traci reed and i realized she's right.  i do document our "everyday" with project life, but i don't think i get the whole picture of our lives.  i've done week in the life the past few years and it's a lot of work.  or maybe i make it a lot of work.  i'm not really sure how i will tie all of this together, but i'm planning to post here every day!!

luckily...my kids didn't let me sleep through the night and i've been up since 4:30 am, so i've had time to prepare and get myself ready for this project.  (thanks kids).

hello monday.  and hello week in the life.

ready, set, go....
